SoulGold evolution stones and items: where to get every one
Where to get every evolution stone and evolution item in SoulGold, from the Linking Cord on Route 38 to the Indigo Plateau mart, and what each one evolves.
Short answer
The Indigo Plateau Pokémon Center mart sells all ten evolution stones, plus the Linking Cord, Peat Block, Black Augurite and both Charcadet armors. Before that, pick up the Linking Cord on Route 38, buy Metal Coat, King's Rock, Dragon Scale and Dubious Disc in Mahogany Town after the Rocket Hideout, and buy the Upgrade at the Safari Zone Gate mart.
The Indigo Plateau Pokémon Center mart sells every evolution stone in SoulGold, all ten of them. You don’t need to wait that long, though. The Linking Cord is on Route 38, the Mahogany Town shop sells the trade items, and three grottos hand out stones as rare items.
Every item here is used from the Bag. Nothing needs a trade.
Where to get evolution stones in SoulGold
Buy what you need at the Indigo Plateau once you reach it. Before that, use this table. The middle column lists the evolutions I’d use each stone for first, not every one in the game.
| Stone | What it evolves | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Fire Stone | Eevee into Flareon | Indigo Plateau mart, Ruins of Alph reward chambers |
| Water Stone | Eevee into Vaporeon. It also opens the WATER wall in the Ruins of Alph | Indigo Plateau mart, Ruins of Alph reward chambers |
| Thunder Stone | Pikachu into Raichu, Eevee into Jolteon, Magneton into Magnezone, Nosepass into Probopass, Charjabug into Vikavolt | Indigo Plateau mart, Ruins of Alph reward chambers |
| Leaf Stone | Gloom into Vileplume, Weepinbell into Victreebel, Eevee into Leafeon | Indigo Plateau mart, Ruins of Alph reward chambers, Ilex Forest grotto |
| Moon Stone | Clefairy into Clefable, Jigglypuff into Wigglytuff | Indigo Plateau mart, Ruins of Alph reward chambers, Pickup |
| Sun Stone | Gloom into Bellossom, Cottonee into Whimsicott, Petilil into Lilligant | Indigo Plateau mart, Route 33 grotto, Pickup |
| Shiny Stone | Togetic into Togekiss, Minccino into Cinccino, Floette into Florges | Gift in Elm’s lab, Indigo Plateau mart |
| Dusk Stone | Lampent into Chandelure, Quilava into Hisuian Typhlosion, Petilil into Hisuian Lilligant | Indigo Plateau mart |
| Dawn Stone | Male Kirlia into Gallade | Indigo Plateau mart |
| Ice Stone | Eevee into Glaceon, Alolan Sandshrew into Alolan Sandslash, Crabrawler into Crabominable | Indigo Plateau mart, Route 44 grotto |
The Goldenrod Game Corner sells Fire, Water, Thunder, Leaf, Moon and Sun Stones for 2,000 coins each, and the Safari Zone Gate mart sells Fire, Water and Leaf. Bug-Catching Contest prizes and item balls hand out more. If you only need one early, the Ruins of Alph chambers are the fastest free set.
A Pickup Pokémon finds Moon and Sun Stones from level 11 up. The odds climb to 10% each at levels 91 to 100. I kept a Pickup ‘mon in my party for the whole midgame and never bought a Moon Stone.
Three stones replace a trip. A Thunder Stone does the Railway Cave evolutions, a Leaf Stone stands in for Ilex Forest, and an Ice Stone stands in for Ice Path B4F.
Linking Cord and trade evolution items
The Linking Cord replaces trading. Use it on Kadabra, Machoke, Graveler, Haunter or Phantump and they evolve on the spot.
Get your first one from the Route 38 item ball. More are for sale at the Indigo Plateau mart, the Goldenrod Game Corner (2,500 coins, listed as Link Cable) and the Safari Zone Gate mart.
Pokémon that evolve by trade while holding an item now just use that item. They evolve into the same Pokémon they do in the main games.
| Item | What it evolves | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Linking Cord | Every trade evolution (Kadabra, Machoke, Graveler, Haunter, Phantump and the rest) | Route 38 item ball, Indigo Plateau mart, Game Corner, Safari Zone Gate mart |
| Metal Coat | Scyther into Scizor, Onix into Steelix | Mahogany Town shop, after the Rocket Hideout |
| King’s Rock | Slowpoke into Slowking, Poliwhirl into Politoed | Slowpoke Well B2F and Mt. Mortar 1F item balls, Mahogany Town shop after the Rocket Hideout |
| Dragon Scale | Seadra into Kingdra | Mahogany Town shop, after the Rocket Hideout |
| Upgrade | Porygon into Porygon2 | Safari Zone Gate mart |
| Dubious Disc | Porygon2 into Porygon-Z | Mahogany Town shop, after the Rocket Hideout |
| Protector | Rhydon into Rhyperior | Kitakami Temple Storage |
| Electirizer | Electabuzz into Electivire | Rare held item on wild Elekid, Electabuzz and Electivire |
Porygon itself only comes from the Game Corner exchange, so grab it when you buy your coins.
Newer evolution items: armors, apples, Peat Block and Black Augurite
Most of the Gen 8 and Gen 9 items are sold. The Indigo Plateau carries the big four.
| Item | What it evolves | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Auspicious Armor | Charcadet into Armarouge | Indigo Plateau mart |
| Malicious Armor | Charcadet into Ceruledge | Indigo Plateau mart |
| Peat Block | Ursaring into Ursaluna | Dark Cave North Side, Indigo Plateau mart |
| Black Augurite | Scyther into Kleavor | Indigo Plateau mart |
| Tart Apple | Applin into Flapple | A house on Route 40 |
| Sweet Apple | Applin into Appletun | A house on Route 40 |
| Syrupy Apple | Applin into Dipplin | A house on Route 40 |
| Galarica Cuff and Galarica Wreath | Galarian Slowpoke (Cuff for Slowbro, Wreath for Slowking) | Azalea Town mart, after 4 badges |
| Cracked Pot and Chipped Pot | Sinistea into Polteageist (either pot works) | Safari Zone Gate mart |
| Unremarkable Teacup | Poltchageist into Sinistcha | Olivine mart, Route 35 grotto |
| Strange Souvenir | Pikachu into Alolan Raichu | Olivine mart |
| Leader’s Crest | Bisharp into Kingambit (level up holding it) | Azalea Town item ball, or steal one from a wild Bisharp |
| Darkness Scroll and Water Scroll | Kubfu into Urshifu | Rocket Arcade shop, postgame |
The Peat Block in Dark Cave North Side is the early one. Ursaring is wild in the same cave by day, so you can do both in one visit.
The pot you use picks the form. A Cracked Pot gives Phony Polteageist and a Chipped Pot gives Antique Polteageist. Teacups work the same way, but I never found a Masterpiece Teacup, so buy the Unremarkable one.
The Scrolls cost a lot. Save up from the Arcade itself before you go shopping.
Items you have to steal
Metal Alloy is only a rare held item on wild Duraludon. Duraludon is a 5% spawn in Victory Road. Bring a Covet or Thief user and keep at it. Put a Compound Eyes or Super Luck Pokémon in your first slot, because that raises the chance a wild Pokémon is holding something.
The Electirizer works the same way on Route 44 Electabuzz. I spent an evening there and gave up, so wait for the Mt. Silver Electivire instead.
You don’t have to steal the rest. Most of them sit in an item ball, with wild held copies as a backup.
| Item | What it evolves | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Prism Scale | Feebas into Milotic | Route 47 item ball, Goldenrod Game Corner (3,000 coins), rare held item on wild Feebas |
| Razor Claw | Sneasel into Weavile at night, Hisuian Sneasel into Sneasler by day | Route 41 item ball, held by wild Sneasel, Jangmo-o, Hakamo-o and Kommo-o |
| Razor Fang | Gligar into Gliscor at night | Route 47 item ball, rare held item on wild Gligar |
| Reaper Cloth | Dusclops into Dusknoir | Kitakami Mountain 4F item ball, rare held item on wild Duskull and Dusclops |
| Magmarizer | Magmar into Magmortar | Rinto Village item ball, rare held item on wild Magby, Magmar and Magmortar |
| Oval Stone | Happiny into Chansey by day | Held by wild Chansey and Blissey |
The Prism Scale is the only way to evolve Feebas, so grab the Route 47 one before you fish for it.
The Everstone is the one item that stops evolution. It’s the rare item in the Route 32 grotto.
Shopping order
- Collect the Shiny Stone gift in Elm’s lab.
- Solve the Ruins of Alph chambers for Fire, Water, Thunder, Leaf and Moon Stones. The puzzle solutions have every answer.
- Pick up the Linking Cord on Route 38.
- Buy Galarica items in Azalea after your 4th badge.
- Clear the Rocket Hideout, then buy Metal Coat, King’s Rock, Dragon Scale and Dubious Disc in Mahogany.

- Buy the armors, Black Augurite and any missing stones at the Indigo Plateau.
For the rare stones, check the Hidden Grotto list and ring a Beckoning Bell when a grotto comes up empty. Then go use everything with the evolution guide open, because a few of these Pokémon need more than the item.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the Linking Cord in SoulGold?
There's one in an item ball on Route 38. The Indigo Plateau mart, the Goldenrod Game Corner and the Safari Zone Gate mart sell more. Use it from the Bag on any Pokémon that evolves by trade in the main games.
Where do I buy evolution stones in SoulGold?
The Indigo Plateau Pokémon Center mart sells all ten: Fire, Water, Thunder, Leaf, Sun, Moon, Shiny, Dusk, Dawn and Ice. Earlier, the Ruins of Alph reward chambers give Fire, Water, Thunder, Leaf and Moon Stones, and Elm's lab gives you a Shiny Stone.
How do I evolve Charcadet in SoulGold?
Use Auspicious Armor for Armarouge or Malicious Armor for Ceruledge. The Indigo Plateau mart sells both. Charcadet is a 2% spawn in Burned Tower 1F and B1F.
Do I need to trade to evolve Pokémon in SoulGold?
No. The Linking Cord replaces every trade evolution. Items like Metal Coat, Dragon Scale and Upgrade are used straight from the Bag, so nothing needs a second player.
